Retail and its supply chain

The retail industry is the largest private sector employer in the UK, with approximately 3 million people employed in over 291,000 stores.  It is very diverse and includes corner shops, market traders, supermarkets, department stores, catalogue companies and internet retailers.

The retail industry is closely linked to the distribution industry which includes wholesale and warehouse supply chains which support retailing through the storage and delivery of goods.

In recent years the difference between the retail and distribution industries has become blurred as more large retailers buy direct from producers and have established their own distribution networks.

Retail and distribution are key employers in Suffolk and there are opportunities for people with the right skills.
